The wonderful Folio Society commissioned me for another Eric Ambler book, this time set in southern France, pre war and in the middle of a hot summer – the work was created in the middle of winter so my powers of imagination were well tested.
The story revolves around Vadassy a man unwittingly caught up in the middle of a spy hunt with several ‘interesting’ guests staying at a hotel. A powerful psychological thriller. A great page turner and definitely one to read while on holiday, just watch where you leave your camera….
I tried to recreate the intense heat and sense of claustrophobia and paranoia that runs through the text using awkward angles, confined compositions and of course a carefully considered colour palette.
