Buzzwords are frequently used in news media. These are words that do not typically occur in everyday speech, but are common among newscasters, talking heads, and pundits on cable news.

These ‘news words’ are accepted by audiences for their implied meaning. But often loaded words are misused or used out of context. The actual definitions can be different than what is implied.

Every weekday, Newswordy will celebrate one of these words.

Along with each word is a definition, a quote with its use (or misuse) in the media, and a news and Twitter feed on the subject.

A unique color is algorithmically generated from the characters in each word to create its background color.

The type is set in Standard CT from Castle Type, a revival of the popular 1950s Swiss typeface, with similar attributes to Akzidenz-Grotesk (a precursor to Helvetica). Standard was also the typeface originally chosen by Massimo Vignelli for the New York City subway system in the late 1960s.

Newswordy is designed and curated by Josh Smith.
